MY COMMUNITY: Student Essay a Project of Love - January 16

Student EssayThis essay was submitted by a West End resident/student at Sister Macnamara School as part of a writing contest at the school. Her enthusiasm for the community she lives in is contagious:

"I Love my community because I Live Close to my friend's and family is because I go visit my grandma to knit, bake bannock and play cards. I Love to go in the community graden in summer and winter because I like to build snowman in the winter and gradening in the summer. Also I Love to go to my neighborhood stores to eat. When I walk down Sargent I run into people and Say "hi" even the people I don't know. I like going to the thrift store on young St and Seeing the cat armani and giving him treats. The parks are fun to, Central park is the most fun because of the water park. There are a few favourit restaurants that I Like to go to the vietman one on blamoral and buger plus and Soap Opera. It is really nice to go for walks in the evening in the summer right through fall. Halloween is really fun we go from balmoral All the way to sherbrook. I like how I feel Safe with the cadet's, police and west end biz patrols. When i go to the mall I like to check out the sales. I like when we have Street party's, all the people on the street's come and we get togethere to come and see Who lives on the street. I really like where I go to school, all the teacher's are all nice."

CHRISTMAS EVE FEAST: Meaningful Community Meal - January 3

Photo courtesy of John GiavedoniThe sixth annual Christmas Eve Feast took place on the afternoon of December 24. Hosted by the Sons of Italy, Sorrento's on Ellice, West End BIZ and X-Cues Billiards & Cafe, the event saw community members and recent immigrants to the city, who have settled in the West End, attend the meal at X-Cues. The festive event featured traditional and Italian dishes, live music, a visit with Santa and Mrs Claus, as well as treats for everyone present.

Many businesses, other sponsors and volunteers generously contributed to the event with their donations of time, money and goods. The success of the event would not have been possible without their contributions. We gratefully acknowledge them!
