SUMMARY:Sing Me a Song You've (Never) Heard Before
DESCRIPTION:The Winnipeg Arts Council is proud to present Sing me a song you’ve (never) heard before\, an exploration of words that give us place\, a sense of home in the unknown.\n\n\n\nIt’s all part of City of Song: a celebration of Winnipeg’s 150th birthday taking place throughout 2024. City of Song showcases the best of Winnipeg’s talents and creates spaces for Winnipeggers to engage in the power of singing with friends and neighbours across the city.\n\n\nFeaturing artists from across disciplines\, Sing me a song… is the world premiere of Too Far to Walk\, a song cycle composed by Karen Sunabacka with poetry by John Samson Fellows. Sunabacka takes existing text from Samson Fellows’s work as lyricist for The Weakerthans and as a solo artist\, and resets them with new original compositions for piano (Lisa Rumpel) and voice (Aaron Hutton).\n\n\n\nThis exciting new work was commissioned with the generous support of the Winnipeg Arts Council and City of Song\, and will be performed by Lisa Rumpel and tenor Aaron Hutton\, two of the city’s most renowned and in-demand operatic musicians. The night will also include a special collaboration between Winnipeg Poet Laureate Chimwemwe Undi and cellist Nathan Krahn\, as well as a performance by acclaimed singer-songwriter Theresa Thor.\n\n\nThis event is presented in partnership with 101.5 UMFM.

SUMMARY:theresa thor & devon gillingham co-release
DESCRIPTION:Local artists theresa thor and devon gillingham will share a co-release. \ntheresa thor is known for a decade of “poetic lyrics and experimental cadence shifts” (Grey Owl Point) as part of Winnipeg duo Bicycle Face\, Theresa has appeared as a soloist and collaborator in the pop\, folk\, classical\, Baroque\, and experimental realms. \nIn her debut solo EP revery\, piano fragments of Frederic Chopin frolic amidst buoyant woodwinds\, the rich synth strains of a Jupiter-8\, and lush field recordings collected from Theresa’s family farm. \nRecommended if you like: Joanna Newsom\, Kate Bush\, Linda Perhacs\, Andy Shauf\, Regina Spektor \ndevon gillingham is a bassist/multi-instrumentalist\, from and currently based in Winnipeg. \nHis second full length album\, “there’s a person in there”\, is one that attempts to combine his interests in acoustic\, open-minded jazz conceptions\, with his love of bombastic rock music. SUMMARY:Just Prince
DESCRIPTION:With opening act Punjabi Dance Boys \nAttention fans of beautifully blended influences as varied as Pink Floyd\, Kurt Cobain\, classical vocal rep\, Punjab folksongs\, and Indian singer Ghulam Ali Khan. Something brilliant is on the horizon. \nToronto based singer-songwriter Just Prince is known for seamlessly blending Western and Eastern sounds into a harmonious tapestry with a captivating style that defies genre constraints. His music weaves elements of folk\, rock\, blues\, and Hindustani classical music into a mesmerizing experience. Just Prince’s evocative compositions take listeners on a sonic journey\, transcending cultural boundaries and resonating with the soul. At the 2023 Ontario Folk Music Awards\, Just Prince was awarded the prestigious Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award. Way to go Just Prince! \nJust Prince started writing his own music as a youth while still living in Punjab\, India. He was studying Indian classical music with expert teacher Humble Shine\, and knew then that he would answer his inner calling to create. “I’ve always wanted to be an independent artist. That to me is freedom of expression.” Learning to make music took a lot of study and immersion. It helped that he was steeped in Indian classical music growing up. “It’s always in the house. Devotional songs are constantly going and then you don’t even realize that\, you know\, you grew up with it so that’s it.” \nThen came western classical voice lessons (think the world of Bach and Mozart)\, with the contrasting scales that genre brings. For the north american pop and folk listener\, Just Prince’s melodies pull back the curtain just a crack\, revealing microtonal inflections of Indian music. These tiny microtones – roughly half the size of a semitone\, the smallest interval in pop music – stretch and pull\, emphasizing tension and expressing relief so effectively. \nAmong his many influences\, popular music of North America got in there too. Just Prince describes iconic 90’s influences we might have all taped onto cassette from the radio: Pink Floyd\, Zeppelin\, Nirvana\, and Soundgarden. \nHe gathers from all these musical worlds to make something that is both authentic and unique. Writing in English\, Hindi\, Urdu\, and Punjabi\, he explores the universal experience of living beneath the same sky\, and\, from behind the safety of the stage where vulnerability comes more easily\, about the love and pride he feels for his mother. “I don’t think I have a specific theme that I write about. It’s a jungle in here. Yeah.” \nWith a guitar\, scales\, and song types from the west\, along with folk song\, devotional song\, and ragas from the east\, Just Prince offers something that only he could. Let’s catch his show before he explodes with fame. \nTICKETS Buy Tickets | WECC

SUMMARY:Veronica Swift with Laura Anglade | TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:VERONICA SWIFT’S new eponymously titled album\, her third for Mack Avenue Records\, is a masterful coming-out story. On her previous albums\, Confessions (2019) and This Bitter Earth (2021)\, she ascended to the upper echelon of early 21st century jazz singers because of her virtuosic brilliance\, interpretive ingenuity\, bracing songwriting\, and keen arrangements. Simply put\, Swift is not only one of the most dazzling singers to emerge in her generation\, she’s one of the most versatile.\nWhile her first two albums solidified her position in modern jazz\, Veronica Swift shows that she’s more than a jazz singer\, exploring French and Italian opera\, European classical music\, bossa nova\, blues\, industrial rock\, funk\, and vaudeville. She pulls the feat off without the results sounding callow or pastiche. Swift’s expansive artistic voice remains firmly intact regardless of genre. She describes this personal artistic statement on her new album as “transgenre.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVeronica Swift\nSocial Media \nInstagram\nYouTube \nDoors – 6:30pm\nShow – 7:30pm \nAll Ages \nTickets \n$50 + Service Fees \nAll tickets subject to service fees \n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Laura Anglade\nFrench-American singer Laura Anglade is a promising storyteller with a lot to say. She draws inspiration from Carmen McRae\, Blossom Dearie\, Sarah Vaughan\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Shirley Horn\, Nancy Wilson\, and Anita O’Day.\nLaura has made a mark in the vibrant music scenes of New York\, Paris\, Toronto\, and Montreal\, collaborating with some of the world’s finest musicians\, including Peter Bernstein\, Jonathan Kreisberg\, Ben Paterson\, Ira Coleman\, Reg Schwager\, and Neil Swainson.\nShe leads an active international touring schedule and has performed at renowned venues like Olympia (Paris)\, the Royal Festival Hall (London)\, Town Hall (New York City)\, the Ace Theatre Hotel (Los Angeles)\, and the mainstage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. She opened for Gregory Porter at the Victoria Jazz Festival (summer 2022)\, and Melody Gardot (fall 2022)\, joining her across the east and west coasts of the United States and in Europe.\nHer debut album\, I’ve Got Just About Everything (Justin Time Records\, 2019) was met with praise by critics and fans alike. Her second Juno-nominated album\, Venez Donc Chez Moi (Justin Time Records\, 2022) is a duo recording featuring Montreal guitarist Sam Kirmayer\, with whom she was awarded the “Prix Opus” for Jazz Concert of the Year in 2023.\n\nVeronica Swift – West End Cultural Centre – Winnipeg – Jun 22\, 2024 · Showpass

SUMMARY:MODO-LIVE & NEW GROUND Present FREE THROW with Slow Joy
DESCRIPTION:Free Throw\nEmo \nTwo years before  emo/indie rock outfit Free Throw formed in Nashville\, the Memphis Grizzlies made national headlines for their “grit and grind.” Some not familiar with basketball may assume this was another phrase describing the team’s tireless work ethic. Journalists and analysts claimed this “grit and grind” was their disruptive defense. A ‘free throw’ is usually given to a player disrupted by defense — so while unintentionally borrowing the ethos of their home state’s NBA franchise\, Free Throw went on the offensive. \nConsider the band’s signature play: a three-guitar attack which stacks raw immediacy with large-scale aspirations. Sometimes this arrangement is abrasive; other times it’s more nuanced. What connects these two different threads is Cory Castro’s frayed vocals\, gaining their power from a violent shout and their confessions from a measured whimper. \nCombine that range with a set of lyrical themes that play out like an uneasy three-way phone call and what remains fills speakers with a darkness offset by instrumentals which sway and bend with warm nostalgia. \nBut what fills most of Free Throw’s golden playbook is a commitment to winning their own way. After strings of DIY touring circuits and an intense love affair with their van\, it’s clear to see their blooming\, road-tested legacy answers to no one but their enthusiastic audiences. With their live sets packing rooms across the country\, not without alcohol and crowd sing-alongs in tow\, it seems this grind has paid off so far\, with the grit packing their songs with not just unrelenting talent\, but the forward-thinking energy to match. \nTickets for FREE THROW with Slow Joy & Alone I Walk | TicketWeb – West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg\, CA

SUMMARY:Reframe - Cluster Festival
DESCRIPTION:Natanielle Felicitas\, Everett Hopfner\, Madeline Hildebrand\, Sarah Jo Kirsch \nUsing the beautifully resonant grand piano as a template\, composers and pianists continue to push further\, contending with all manners of extensions: processing live and fixed electronics\, preparing the strings with any number of foreign materials\, and augmenting the sound with additional keyboard instruments. Madeline Hildebrand and Everett Hopfer take audiences on an exploration of these dazzling soundscapes with a program of keyboard repertoire that defies expectation. Cellist Natanielle Felicitas\, is renowned for her cross-genre collaborative in Winnipeg’s music scene and will be presenting a rare solo performance featuring a premiere of new cello and electronics work. Long-time collaborators and contributors to Cluster\, but never at the same time\, Sarah Jo Kirsch and Madeline Hildebrand bring a musical offering about feeling way too much in a world of contradictions. Oscillating between the emotional extremes that roil in this masterfully selected program of pieces\, Kirsch and Hildebrand presents listeners with a salve for the ache and shines a poetically hopeful light on the absurdity of it all.\nBuy Tickets | WECC

SUMMARY:PULSE - Cluster Festival
DESCRIPTION:Jason Tait\, Debashis Sinha\, Compost \nA triple-feature concert with Debashis Sinhas\, Jason Tait and Compost that explores the meditative\, trance-inducing power of sound. Sinhas’ quadraphonic sound performance\, Rückstreuung\, uses the principles of subharmonic synthesis to create an immersive sound field for the audience\, responding in real time to the architecture and the interplay of frequencies. This improvised performance interacts with the moment to offer a hearing experience that is rooted in traditions of meditation and active listening. Jason Tait will be premiering a new work\, a series of structured improvisations for modular and analog synthesizers\, sculpting an all enveloping sound bath for listeners to lose themselves in. Compost will be premiering\, Decomposed\, a multi-movement through-composed work for Fender Rhodes\, electric bass\, drums\, spoken word samples\, and projected time-lapse photography. Collective improvisations will be recorded and then decomposed into harmonically simple\, polyrhythmic cellular motifs\, mimicking the connective roles of mycelium.\nBuy Tickets | WECC

SUMMARY:Anton Tymoshenko | Underground StandUp
DESCRIPTION:“FIRST IN THE USA AND CANADA – STAND-UP COMEDY BY ANTON TYMOSHENKO!\nAttention! Location changed!\nThe performance will take place at the West End Cultural Center. All purchased tickets remain valid.\nAnton Tymoshenko is one of the most prominent Ukrainian stand-up comedians. He graduated from the philosophy faculty\, where he wrote a thesis on how humor contextualizes political discourse. He is a resident of “Underground Stand-Up” – Ukraine’s largest stand-up project.\nAnton Tymoshenko became the first Ukrainian stand-up comedian to fill the largest concert venue in Kyiv and Ukraine – the Palace “Ukraine”.\nEven before the war\, Anton became known to audiences for his political stand-up. After the start of full-scale invasion\, Anton aimed at an international audience\, recording two 15-minute videos in English to draw attention to the war and raise funds for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. His performances became not only informational but also an attempt to enter a new market. Foreign media reached out to Tymoshenko for interviews\, including David Letterman.\nIn May-June 2024\, Anton will embark on his first charity tour of North America\, for which he is writing a new program. It will be about corruption\, Work & Travel\, machine uprising\, economy\, empathy in war\, and drugs\, so the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) might provide security. The tour has a serious charitable mission – all 100% of the proceeds will be directed to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces\, so we invite everyone to the concerts!\nAll ages show. Parental guidance is suggested. Explicit content.”\n  \nAnton Tymoshenko | Underground StandUp | Winnipeg Tickets in Winnipeg\, MB\, Canada (ticketleap.com)

SUMMARY:SOLTWAIN - Solhounds play Shania Twain
DESCRIPTION:They call themselves heavy-metal grunge\, only because there’s no other way to describe their gritty\, gut-ripping\, brand of stoner rock. The combatant energy this band radiates on stage is one you can’t dismiss. You’ll drop your phone\, dig into the old\, angsty feelings you thought you left behind\, raise your devil horns\, and head bang at all things corporate\, bigoted\, and unjust.\nSolhounds drives a movement of equality and empowerment; one where a five-foot-three-inch woman could stone a giant with the martial punch of her guttural\, smoky vocals. Delivering songs from the perspective of the underestimated and under-appreciated\, breaking free from the ideas of right-wing prejudice\, capitalism\, and misogyny\, crowds will be activated with unapologetic lyrics over massive grooves\, sludgy tones\, and doom heaviness.\nAfter a five-year hiatus the Winnipeg-based band is returning to stages to reintroduce a message that has more meaning\, today\, than it ever did.\n  \nTICKETS SOLHOUNDS Reunion Show!!
