Celebrating New Business Week:
Yuka’s Bakery Brings a Taste of Japan to the West End
As New Business Week comes to a close, the West End BIZ is celebrating the businesses, new and growing, that continue to shape the neighbourhood’s culture, economy, and sense of community.
One of those businesses is Yuka’s Bakery, where Japanese-style baking meets local connection in a warm, welcoming space.
A Passion Turned into a Community Space
Owner and pastry chef Yuka Katahira is involved in every part of the business, from developing recipes to serving customers. What began as a personal passion has grown into a bakery rooted in sharing Japanese flavours with the West End.
“I wanted to create a space where people could experience something different, but still comforting and approachable,” she says.
That philosophy extends beyond flavour. Yuka’s Bakery is designed to be inclusive, offering a variety of options including vegan, gluten-free, and eggless items, so more people can enjoy the experience together.
Light, Fluffy, and Thoughtfully Made
For many customers, Japanese-style baking offers something new.
“Japanese baking tends to be lighter, less sweet, and more focused on texture,” Yuka explains. “A lot of our breads are very soft and fluffy, and we balance flavours so they’re not overwhelming.”
Popular items include matcha drinks, soft pastries, and seasonal creations, alongside staples like milk bread and Japanese cheesecake. For those looking for a full experience, Yuka recommends pairing a pastry with a drink, and taking the time to enjoy it.
The menu also includes traditional comfort foods like katsudon and Japanese curry, bringing another layer of authenticity to the bakery.
Rooted in Tradition, Made for Winnipeg
Drawing on techniques inspired by her background in Tokyo, as well as training in Australia and Ireland, Yuka incorporates traditional methods into her baking—particularly when it comes to dough preparation and achieving the perfect texture.
But beyond technique, it’s the connection with customers that has stood out most.
“It’s not just about the food,” she says. “It’s about the relationships you build every day.”
Since opening, the bakery has seen strong support from the community, with many returning customers helping to build momentum and a sense of belonging.
Why the West End
Choosing the West End was an intentional decision.
“I wanted to be part of a neighbourhood with a strong sense of community and diversity,” Yuka says. “Plus, my partner grew up here, so it felt like the right fit.”
With a growing mix of businesses, students, and residents, the area continues to evolve, creating opportunities for small businesses to connect with new audiences.
Just last week Yuka went to Daniel McIntyre Collegiate to participate in a young entrepreneur’s panel discussion, answering questions about running your own business and offering support to the next generation of business owners.
“There’s a lot of energy here,” she adds. “People are open to trying new things, and it’s a supportive environment.”
Growing Together
As the neighbourhood grows, so does Yuka’s Bakery. Increased foot traffic and interest in local businesses reflect a broader shift toward supporting small, independent shops.
For Yuka, that support is essential.
“It truly makes a difference,” she says. “We rely on the community, and we try to give back by being part of it.”
This shared relationship between businesses and community is exactly what the West End BIZ works to foster, through initiatives like New Business Week that highlight local entrepreneurs and encourage residents to shop close to home.
Looking Ahead
With excitement for the future, Yuka is committed to continuing to grow alongside the West End.
“There’s a lot of potential here,” she says. “I’d love to keep being part of that.”
And for those who haven’t visited yet, her message is simple:
“Thank you for your support—and we’d love to welcome you in.”
